Rats

Rats are highly intelligent and social animals, and can be wonderfully affecionate. They need to live in minimum of pairs, and have a large cage with lots of toys for stimulation as well as comfy lounging spots. Rats are great as they love most foods we do! It's easier to give a list of what they can't eat than what they can. Ours enjoy rat-friendly versions of our meals often! Variety is important in a rats diet, which is why all of ours are on the Shunamite diet (see link below) But remember, a cage is not enough, rats crave human interaction and to be out and explore, a safe free range area is essential. Wether this is the sofa, a hall, the bathroom or a whole room! Free range toys are a must and you can join in with activities such as pea fishing, or playing with cat dangly toys!

We advise the following websites for rat care information

Examples of suitable set-ups

It's all about size and stimulation! For a pair of rats the minimum size cage we would advise/rehome to is a Savic Freddy 2. (80x50x60cm). The fancy rats cage calculator is a handy guide. Though if adopting from us please use the larger 2.5 cubic feet per rat option. Below are some examples of set-ups suitable for 2-4 rats. The Ferplast Jenny & half a Liberta Explorer. Both feature lots of activity to climb in / on / around and comfy snoozing spots!  You should have as many places to sleep as you have rats ideally and lots and lots of stimuation. You should vary the toys and layout around once a month to keep their busy minds active and engaged.  Rats love hammocks, tubes and tubes, and you can make them cheap toys like poundshop peg bags, hanging baskets filled with fleece, hanging kids storage, dog toys hanging from the bars and much much more! The more the better for rats! :) You're only really limited by your imagination! Some rats also enjoy wheels, make sure it's the largest size 12"/ 30cm ones otherwise they can cause spinal damage.

Rats available for adoption

8 Bucks

These are our male rats currently looking for homes. There's 8 of them all together. These little guys are around 10 weeks old, and came to us after being dumped outside a local animal shelter in a small box marked "boys" There was 15 of them in there, and the poor things were soaked with condensation as it was a hot day! The others have gone to another rescue and some have been homed, but these 8 are still looking! They were very shy when first coming to us (and who can blame them!) but now they;re super inquisitive little guys, always wanting out of the cage for a cuddle or a good old run around. They're proving to be brilliant shoulder rats and love to cuddle up in your hood. They've all got their individual personalities though, so if you're interested in adopting I strongly urge you come meet them, and see for yourself. To be rehomed in minimum of pairs, and as with all our animals, subject to checks and adoption fee :)

6 Does

We currently have 6 girls who's owner could no longer cope due to a relationship breakdown and having to move back with parents. All of the girls are pretty shy, but very inquisitive and curious so I can't see that lasting! They're all ok once you've picked them up, and are happy to sit in a sleeve or other safe secure dark place! These girls need to go in pairs, and at the moment with an experienced or well researched  owner whos willing to put the time in with them, they're jam packed with potential and will make fantastic little pets!
